Goal of the Dutch Folklore Platform Foundation (DFP Foundation):

To improve the image and knowledge of Dutch folk dance, folk dance music and traditional costumes.

Origin of the DFP Foundation
Around 1990, the DFP Foundation started amongst some enthousiastic folk dancers interested in performing dances of "traditional Dutch" origin. We like to dance these because they fit into our culture and the way we move. Also, we wanted to pay attention to new Dutch dances in which traditional and new elements were combined. After all, folklore is alive and has to be renewed continuously!

Apart from this "folk dance" approach to Dutch folk dance there is also a "folkloristic" approach: the old dances should be preserved unchanged as our cultural heritage. This is advocated by the members of the Federation of Folkloristic Groups in The Netherlands (FFGN).

The DFP Foundation wishes to promote a fertile interaction between these two movements. This is achieved by organising:
  • Dance instructions of new and traditional repertoire,
  • Refresher courses for musicians,
  • Excursions to regional costumes exhibitions,
  • Publication of a newsletter (Platforum),
  • Platform meetings.

Platform meetings

In these meetings, representatives of the three different folk dance movements exchange information, demonstrate dances and dance together in a ball to live music:

  • Groups that only dance Dutch folk dances;
  • LCA groups which dance foreign folk dances but which perform dances from many Dutch regions when abroad;
  • FFGN groups with traditional dances and costumes from their own region only.

Platforum Newsletter

The DFP Foundation distributes a modest newsletter (in Dutch), Platforum, amongst supporters of the Foundation. This includes small articles and a list of interesting events on Dutch folk dance, folk dance music and traditional costumes. Please download the most recent list of activities (in Dutch) here.
